I'm Helen Houghton, a professional and experienced therapist specialising in Hypnoanalysis (analytical hypnotherapy) - a powerful approach that combines the deeply relaxing state of hypnosis with a process that gently uncovers and resolves the root cause of emotional and physical symptoms, so you can regain control and enjoy life again.

An individual approach

Everyone is individual, and I use an individual approach to put you back in control - with kindness, understanding and support.

Many of my clients come to me after trying conventional therapies like counselling or CBT. Despite their best efforts, they still feel overwhelmed, anxious, stuck, or just not quite right. They've talked through their problems, used logic and willpower, but deep down, nothing seems to shift. That's where my approach is different.

I work with the mind's natural process of emotional release to safely access the deeper, unresolved issues that may be buried out of sight - helping you move forward, feel lighter, and live more freely. If you're feeling hopeless, worthless, or like you're constantly triggered by situations you don't fully understand, you are not alone, and you don't have to stay stuck.

This unique and highly successful therapy gives you the ability to use the power of your mind to relieve symptoms and change behaviour by addressing the root cause of the problem.

Therapies offered

A person-centred solution for every client.

I spend as much time as the client needs on the explanation of each therapy in the free initial consultation, so you feel fully informed and confident in the solutions suggested.

During our life we may find that we have an increasing feeling of being out of control - maybe a sense that something is wrong, but however hard we try, the feeling remains, making us feel worthless. It's hard to explain, but it invariably impacts our life in one way or another.

This feeling that there is something inside us but outside our control may be the effect of bottled up emotion, hidden away and looking for a means of escape. This form of therapy seeks to find and release that cause, so the symptoms disappear. Emotional problems respond particularly well to Analytical Hypnotherapy. It's done in a safe, secure way under hypnosis, enabling the client to uncover the cause in their own time - a natural purging that leaves the client free to unlock their potential. It's often described as the final piece of the jigsaw.

Usually 6–12 sessions, once a week, approximately an hour.

Suggestion Therapy uses the power of positive suggestion to enhance, motivate or change behaviour, and is ideally suited to weight management, healthy eating regimes, stress management, and alleviating fear - for example public speaking, flying, injections, or visits to the dentist.

During each session you'll be relaxed into a calm, light hypnotic state where you're wide awake and fully in control, and you'll be given suggestions that affect your behaviour and feelings once you're out of the hypnotic state - hence the term "post-hypnotic suggestion".

Suggestion therapy can be very effective, but the results are only temporary. It's particularly useful when short-term benefits are needed, and only one or two sessions are usually required, with perhaps a booster session later. For stop smoking or weight management, it's combined with a powerful cognitive therapy for a long-term solution.

Usually 1–2 sessions, plus an optional booster.

Are you unhappy with your weight? Constantly looking for the perfect diet? Does your weight yoyo? Do you struggle with motivation and willpower? If the answer to any of these is yes, it's time to try a new direction.

All too often, low self-esteem, lack of confidence and anxiety undermine the strongest willpower, causing attempts to lose weight to fail sooner or later. I prefer to focus on gaining the ideal weight and shape rather than losing excess weight, as the subconscious mind will always try to regain anything you lose - even if you desperately want to lose it.

I offer two solutions: suggestion therapy individually tailored to your circumstances, working on both the conscious mind (giving you valuable tools for success) and the subconscious mind (using the relaxing form of hypnosis), which has a subtle yet profound effect on your conscious efforts - usually 2 to 3 sessions of about an hour. And analytical therapy, for clients who suffer anxiety, low self-esteem, or who just don't feel right: the client is relaxed into hypnosis and, using free-association, releases and resolves bottled-up emotions, conflicts and anxieties. If excessive eating is triggered by emotional problems, releasing the emotion reduces the drive to eat excessively.

Suggestion therapy: 2–3 sessions · Analytical therapy: 8–10 sessions, weekly.

A preventative and empowering approach.

Stress is the emotional, physiological and psychological effect of a build-up of internally or externally generated mental pressure. Stress isn't what happens to us - it's our response to what happens, and our response is something we can change.

The training is aimed firstly at anyone experiencing the signs and symptoms of stress, including anxiety, panic attacks, depression, feeling powerless or out of control, anger, irritability, dependence on alcohol or cigarettes, poor memory, indecision, and numerous aches and pains. Secondly, it's for anyone who works alongside or manages someone prone to stress - recognising the symptoms in others enables a more proactive, supportive and efficient working environment.

Stress will manifest in a myriad of ways, but remember, we all need an amount of stress in our lives - to survive, to do our jobs, and to give us the will and energy to cope with the excitement of life. Stress is not only helpful and necessary, it's a positive force in our life.

4 sessions to build the tools and knowledge to combat stress.

This powerful programme focuses on the individual, providing valuable insight that allows personal growth and development, promoting positive change and helping you regain control over your life.

During times of significant change - when current coping strategies become redundant and a feeling of being completely out of control takes over - spiralling emotions, anxiety, panic attacks and stress can become overwhelming, and rational thinking and everyday functioning become difficult.

Change Therapy can help you find balance and regain control of your life. It's extremely effective for those dealing with bereavement, facing redundancy, leaving school or university, coping with a new job, or any other significant change.

Usually 2–6 sessions, depending on individual circumstances.
